The standard we are building to

The target is WCAG 2.2 level AA. That is a goal this site is built against, not a result it has been audited for: no formal accessibility statement has been published for istacon.org, and the one for this rebuild is still being prepared.

Verified today

Every page has exactly one h1 and no skipped heading levels.

Asserted across 18 routes in tests/e2e/accessibility.spec.ts.

No automated axe violations at WCAG 2.0/2.1/2.2 A and AA.

axe-core runs over the same 18 routes in CI. Lighthouse accessibility scores 100 on the homepage.

A skip link is the first focusable element on every page.

Asserted in CI, including that it is visible on focus and moves focus to main.

Every interactive element has a visible focus indicator.

Sampled and asserted in CI; a cyan variant is used on dark sections.

The mobile menu behaves as a dialog: focus moves in, is trapped, Escape closes, focus returns.

The full contract is asserted in CI.

No horizontal scrolling at 360px or at 320px (200% zoom equivalent).

Asserted per route, naming the offending element when it fails.

Interactive targets are at least 44px tall.

Asserted in CI, with the WCAG 2.2 inline exception for links inside body copy.

All animation stops for prefers-reduced-motion, and content stays fully legible.

Suppressed globally, with a static end state per component. The reading-progress bar removes itself entirely.

Status is never conveyed by colour alone.

Every availability indicator carries text: "Tickets on sale", "Sold out", "Closed".

Every image has a deliberate alt decision.

The image component requires alt as a prop, so it cannot be omitted — only decided. Where the source published placeholder alt, images are marked decorative instead.

Known gaps

• The manual keyboard pass across the full route matrix has not been completed. Automation proves focus exists; only a person can tell you the order makes sense.
• The manual screen-reader pass (VoiceOver and NVDA) has not been completed.
• Venue accessibility information — step-free access, accessible parking, quiet spaces — is not published anywhere by ISTA, so this site cannot state it. Ask and it will be confirmed individually.
• Of the 43 archive photographs, 43 carry no photographer credit and 27 were published with no description at all. Those 27 are carried as decorative rather than described inaccurately, which means a screen-reader user gets nothing from them.
• The one published legal document is in Bulgarian only, with no English translation.

Access needs for the event — step-free access, a companion ticket, dietary requirements, a quiet space — are confirmed individually, and none of them require a reason.
